This guide explains how to set up multi-language size charts to provide a seamless shopping experience for international customers. When enabled, SmartSize automatically displays the appropriate size chart language based on your customer's store language selection.
Prerequisites
- Shopify’s Translate & Adapt app installed
- At least one size chart created
-
Important: if you have a third party app that does translations for your store, you do not need to do any of these steps. Your size charts should be translated automatically.
Step 1: Enable multi-language support
- Navigate to Settings in the SmartSize menu.
- Under Other Settings, click on Multilanguage Stores.
- Click Continue to access multi-language settings.
- Check the box labeled Enable multilanguage size charts to activate this feature.
Important: Ensure your Shopify store has the Translate & Adapt app (by Shopify) installed, or another compatible translation app.
Step 2: Follow the configuration steps
Follow the three step guide as shown in the section
Step 3: Create size charts in different languages
There are two options.
a) Default language:
If your size chart is in the default language of your store, leave as Default language. (example: the size chart is in english and the default language of your store is English).
Important: the default language is also the language that will appear in case a translations is missing.
b) Translated language:
If the size chart is in a different language, for example French, choose Translated language and then select the language of the size chart. This does not create automatic translations. Translations need to be done manually by you.
Tip: Use free translation tools like Google Translate or ChatGPT for quick translations.
Click Save when finished.
Step 4: Test your multi-language setup
- Visit your store’s product pages.
- Switch between languages using your store’s language selector.
- Verify that size charts display in the correct language for each selection.
Expected Result
- Multi-language support is enabled in SmartSize.
- Size charts display automatically in the customer’s selected language.
- If a translation is not available, the size chart displays in your default language.
- Customers experience a consistent, localized shopping journey.
Additional Information
What happens if a translation is missing?
If a customer browses your store in a language for which you haven’t created a translated size chart, they will see the chart in your default store language. This ensures customers always have access to sizing information.
Translating the size chart button
The size chart button label and unit conversion toggle (cm/in) can also be translated using Shopify’s Translate & Adapt app:
- Open Translate & Adapt in your Shopify admin.
- Select App embeds.
- Choose SmartSize.
- Select your target language and add translations for button labels.
Troubleshooting
Size charts not changing language
- Verify that Enable multilanguage size charts is checked in Settings → Multilanguage Stores.
- Confirm you have created translated versions for the languages you are testing.
- Check that your Shopify store’s Translate & Adapt app is properly configured.
Some content still appears in the wrong language
- Ensure you have translated all sections of the size chart (table, instructions, header, footer).
- Verify you selected the correct language from the dropdown when creating the translation.
Translation app not working
- Ensure Translate & Adapt (or your translation app) is properly installed and configured.
- Check that your Shopify store has multiple languages enabled in Settings → Languages.
